Introducing our Head of Manufacturing: Nick McCarthy

Towards the end of 2022, Nick McCarthy joined the PSR business as Head of Manufacturing, following the retirement of long-serving PSR employee, and latterly Production Director, David Ferguson. As Glasstec 2024 approaches, we thought it a good time to introduce him.

Nick has a Masters degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Salford. Before joining PSR, Nick was involved in Aerospace, Tier 1 Automotive and Industrial Manufacturing environments, working his way up to Operations Manager, overseeing a team of 90 staff and an annual turnover of £20m. During this time Nick also gained certification in Lean Manufacturing Methods. Nick, therefore, brought with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in engineering and manufacturing management. With a strong emphasis on culture and values, Nick has been a valuable
addition, fitting in seamlessly to the fabric of PSR.

At PSR Nick is responsible for overseeing our refractory manufacturing operations, ensuring that our products are manufactured as efficiently as possible, to the highest quality, whilst meeting the delivery demands of our clients.

As part of the company’s strategic improvement plan, during 2024 Nick has overseen the implementation of a refractory expendable stockholding system to improve our service to our customers. This has resulted in a drastic  improvement in our delivery performance, with 50% of orders now serviced on a five-week lead time or less, and 90% on an eight-week lead time or less.

Outside of work Nick volunteers as a Flight Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Air Cadets, having been an Officer Cadet with the British Army during his studies in Salford. The military discipline and leadership skills learnt during his service have also proved invaluable to his leadership role at PSR.
